How Solar Inverters Work

Solar photovoltaic modules generate direct current (DC) electricity, but homes and businesses in Thailand run on alternating current (AC) at 220 volts and 50 hertz. The inverter is the critical bridge that converts DC power from your solar arrays into usable AC power for appliances, lighting, and equipment.

Modern inverters use Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology to maximise energy harvest from your PV panels. MPPT charge controllers continuously adjust the electrical operating point of the solar array, ensuring it produces at peak voltage and current even as sunlight intensity changes throughout the day. A well-configured MPPT system can increase annual energy yield by 20% to 30% compared to simple PWM controllers.

The inverter also manages grid interaction. In grid-tie systems, it synchronises its AC output frequency and voltage with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) supply, allowing excess generation to flow back to the grid. Hybrid and off-grid inverters include anti-islanding protection, a safety feature that instantly disconnects the solar system from the grid during outages to prevent energising downed power lines and endangering repair workers.

Inverter Types We Install

Grid-Tie Inverters

The simplest and most cost-effective option for properties with reliable grid access. Grid-tie inverters convert all solar DC power to AC and feed it directly into your building's electrical system. Excess generation exports to the PEA grid through net metering arrangements. These systems shut down during grid outages for safety, they do not provide backup power. Best for urban homes and commercial buildings in stable grid areas with net metering agreements.

Hybrid Inverters

The most popular choice for Thai residential installations. Hybrid inverters manage both solar arrays and battery banks, converting DC to AC while simultaneously routing surplus energy to storage. When the grid fails, the inverter automatically switches to stand-alone mode, drawing power from the battery bank to keep essential circuits running. We recommend hybrid systems for Koh Chang properties and other locations where grid reliability varies seasonally.

Off-Grid Inverters

For remote properties without grid connection. Off-grid inverters operate independently, managing power flows between solar arrays, batteries, and household loads. They require larger battery banks and solar arrays sized for worst-case weather conditions, typically 2 to 3 days of autonomy during monsoon season. We design these systems with generous capacity margins to ensure reliable power year-round.

Why Inverter Choice Matters in Thailand

Thailand's tropical climate places unique demands on inverter performance. Ambient temperatures regularly reach 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, and inverter efficiency degrades as internal temperature rises. We specify inverters with wide operating temperature ranges (-20°C to +60°C) and install them in ventilated, shaded locations, never in direct sunlight or enclosed spaces without airflow.

Humidity is another factor. Coastal installations on Koh Chang and other islands face salt-laden air that corrodes unprotected electronics. We recommend inverters with IP65-rated enclosures for outdoor mounting, or indoor installation in climate-controlled utility rooms. All AC and DC terminals receive anti-corrosion treatment during installation.

Thailand's grid voltage fluctuates more than in developed countries, with swings between 210V and 240V common in rural areas. Quality inverters handle this range without issue, but cheap units may trip offline unnecessarily, wasting generation. We specify inverters with wide voltage windows (180V to 270V) and automatic restart after grid events.

What You Get with Our Inverter Service

  • Load analysis: We calculate your peak and average power demand to size the inverter correctly, typically 1.2 to 1.5 times your maximum load for headroom.
  • Brand selection: We supply Deye and Sofar inverters, proven in Thai conditions with local warranty support. Both brands offer WiFi monitoring and smartphone app integration.
  • Professional mounting: Wall-mounted installation with proper ventilation clearance, seismic-rated brackets, and cable management. We never mount inverters directly above batteries or other heat sources.
  • Grid synchronisation: Phase alignment, frequency matching, and anti-islanding tests completed before commissioning. We provide PEA-compliant documentation for net metering applications.
  • Monitoring setup: App configuration so you can track real-time power output, daily generation, and system health from your phone.
  • 5-year warranty: All inverters carry manufacturer warranties with local service support through our Koh Chang office.

Inverter Performance and Monitoring

MPPT Tracking Efficiency

Our inverters achieve 99.5% MPPT efficiency, capturing maximum energy even during partial shading from passing clouds or afternoon tree shadows.

Conversion Efficiency

Peak DC-to-AC conversion reaches 98.6%, with Euro efficiency (weighted average) above 97.5% across Thailand's typical operating temperature range.

Smartphone Monitoring

Real-time data on power output, voltage, current, and daily yield. Historical graphs help identify performance trends and detect issues early.

Automatic Fault Detection

Inverters self-diagnose ground faults, arc faults, and insulation failures, alerting you immediately if a safety issue develops.
