How Solar Racking Systems Work

A solar racking system is the structural foundation that holds photovoltaic modules in place for 25 years or more. It must withstand tropical storms, seismic events, thermal expansion, and constant UV exposure, all while keeping panels at the optimal tilt angle to maximise annual energy yield.

The mounting system consists of several integrated components: roof attachments that penetrate or clamp to the existing roof structure; rails that span across the roof surface; and module clamps that grip the aluminium frame of each solar panel. Every connection point must be electrically bonded and grounded to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and to provide a safe path for lightning strikes.

In Thailand, we engineer mounting systems for a design wind speed of 150 kilometres per hour, matching the maximum wind loads specified in Thai building codes for coastal and exposed areas. This exceeds typical monsoon wind speeds but provides the safety margin needed when storms occasionally intensify beyond forecast levels. All structural bolts use A2-70 stainless steel to resist corrosion from salt spray and acid rain.

Mounting Solutions by Roof Type

Concrete and Flat Roofs

The most common roof type in modern Thai construction. We use chemical anchor bolts drilled into structural concrete with epoxy resin bonding. For large commercial installations, we install aluminium ballasted frames that distribute weight across the roof slab without penetrations, ideal where waterproofing integrity must be preserved. Tilt angles are optimised based on latitude; for most of Thailand (12°N to 18°N), we set panels between 10 and 15 degrees for optimal year-round production.

Metal Sheet Roofs (Trapezoidal)

Common in factories, warehouses, and rural homes. We use standing-seam clamps or L-foot brackets with butyl rubber flashings that create a watertight seal around each penetration point. Thermal expansion clips allow the metal roof to expand and contract without stressing the mounting rails. Critical for Thailand where metal roofs reach 60°C in direct sun, creating significant thermal movement cycles daily.

Ceramic Tile Roofs

Traditional Thai architecture often uses curved ceramic tiles. Installation requires removing individual tiles, installing flashing plates beneath, and replacing tiles around the mounting points. We use tile hooks designed for the specific tile profile, S-tiles, W-tiles, or flat interlocking tiles. Extra care is taken to maintain the roof's water-shedding capability, as broken or improperly seated tiles lead to leaks during monsoon rains.

Why Proper Mounting Matters in Thailand

Thailand's climate is uniquely challenging for solar mounting systems. Year-round high humidity accelerates corrosion of steel components, which is why we specify marine-grade anodised aluminium (6063-T5 alloy) for all rails, clamps, and brackets. This alloy forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further corrosion even when scratched or abraded.

Coastal installations face additional salt spray exposure. On Koh Chang and similar islands, airborne salt deposits on metal surfaces within weeks, creating electrolytic cells that pit and weaken structural members. Our mounting hardware receives additional anodising thickness (20 microns versus the standard 10) and all fasteners are A4-80 marine stainless steel, the highest corrosion resistance class available.

Thermal expansion is significant. A 6-meter aluminium rail on a Thai rooftop can expand by 8 to 10 millimetres between dawn (25°C) and peak afternoon (65°C). Our systems use slotted rail joints and expansion clips that accommodate this movement without stressing panel frames or loosening connections over time.
